National Learn to Row Day 2023
Each year USRowing affiliated organizations host a National Learn to Row day. It is a free event to get more people out on the water and introduce new people to the sport of rowing. This year FVRA had planned to hold two sessions but the second had to be canceled due to increasing winds. Early morning participants arrived on an overcast day to be greeted
“The Flip Test”
Here is the biggest problem with racing singles, in order to make them fast, you have to make them narrow. A rowboat is wide and stable, but not very exciting to row. A racing single is narrow and tippy, but once you get the hang of it, is FAST and FUN!! There is definitely a phase while learning to scull which involves swimming. I used
Unforeseen Benefits of Joining a Rowing Club
In 2013 I was in need of a local rowing club. Not to row with, but because I was intent on buying a 1x and needed a place to rack it. After an 11-year reprieve, I wanted to return to rowing but didn’t want to row with a club again as my previous experience had not been positive. Buying a 1x and rowing alone was
Rower Connection: Janice Wingo
How did you find the sport of rowing? Or did it find you? As a freshman in college in 1980, the women’s crew coach approached me at registration and asked if I would be interested in joining the crew team. So rowing found me! The thought of learning a new sport was intriguing but intimidating. I did not act on his suggestion and regretted it.

Winter Training 2015
It’s February in New England. It’s cold, it’s dreary, and we’re all feeling winter’s cold icy clutch. Despite poor weather conditions, rowers are already deep into the winter training session preparing to hit the water in the spring ready to row. This year we have 12 new rowers and 20 experienced rowers, most of who represent the FVRA men’s and women’s racing teams. "We have a great

Dock Improvements and Summer Programs
New dock sections came in and were assembled this weekend. The dock is now much wider providing more stability while launching. While it has been put in, the water is still very cold and rowing is not set to start for another couple of weeks. We are wrapping up the details for our spring/summer programs. Around the end of May into early June we will have
